Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University was established by archeologist, museum director and painter Osman Hamdi Bey in 1882 under the name “Sanayi-i Nefise Mekteb-i Alisi” (The Imperial School of Fine Arts).  This establishment started art and architecture education in our country in 1883, and became the first higher education institution to be given the title ‘academy’ by taking the name “Fine Arts Academy”in 1928.

Our institution, being a well match for Atatürk’s vision of a modern, contemporary civilization, has been an innovative establishment of the Republic era, ever since its birth as “Sanayi-i Nefise Mektebi”, and has always been the leader in contemporary art and architecture education.

Gaining its scientific autonomy in 1969, the Academy added to its existing range of Fine Arts and Architecture Faculties, the newly established Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Institute of Positive Sciences, Institute of Social Sciences, State Conservatory and Graduate School, and became “Mimar Sinan University”.

The departments of our Fine Arts Faculty observe a mostly ‘hands on’ applied education, and are listed by establishment dates as follows; Department of Painting (1883), Department of Sculpture (1883), Department of Graphic Design (1927), Department of Ceramic and Glass Design (1930), Department of Traditional Turkish Arts (1936), Department of Textile and Fashion Design (1938);  Department of Stage and Costume Design (1958), Department of Photography (1978); Department of Cinema-TV (1974); Department of Photography (1978); Department of Basic Art Education (1997) and Department of Conservation and Restorationof Art Works (2009)

Our university is proud to have the MSGSU Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, established by Atatürk’s order in 1937 and joined to the Academy the same year, and the Tophane-i Amire Building used as a Culture and Arts Center, along with its efforts to raise artists and scientists, continuously works on new projects to improve the Contemporary Turkish Arts and Culture.

Having taken its final name ‘Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University’ in 2004, our university has signed many cooperative deals and engagements, and has provided mobility of students and staff, created extensive projects with international partner universities and formed long lasting collaborations.
