İstanbul, the city which has been and defined as the center for cultural statements and Art in Turkey, is 2010 European Capital of Culture. İstanbul, with its geographical positioning as a connection of two continents, had been a place for different cultural and social movements. As being the harbour for various trade routes in the past, this city also has been an important station for cultural main streams. This year our university had been a station of one of the important events of this long term trading of products, 10th Encounter of Mediterranean Art Schools.

Within this web site we adress the internet platform that is the main area trade and cultural webs are intermingled. In our web site we aim to share the process and products on the route of the encounter.

In this internet station, during 10th Encounter of Mediterranean Arts Schools, the collaborative productions of 30 art schools, various discussions and opinions on art education and all aspects of the encounter have been published and shared.

This site aims to show the viewers contemporarian artistic and cultural openings produced by Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Faculty of Fine Arts events. In this sense, it is used as the electronic harbour, connection and sharing area for those events.

10th ENCOUNTER of the MEDITERRANEAN ART SCHOOLS

“10th Encounter of Mediterranean Arts Schools” took place in Istanbul, 2010 European Capital of Culture, with collaboration of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Fine Arts Faculty and Ecume. Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University had been the host for the encounter of 29 Mediterranean Art school in 03-08 May 2010.

Since 1985, in different cities of Mediterranean countries, the art schools gather every year in the first week of May with the organization of ECUME (Echanges Culturels En Méditerranée). In 2010 Mediterranean Art schools met in Istanbul with the support of 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency. Under the theme of encounter, Art schools from 16 countries, 27 cities which has borders to Mediterranean Sea, one director, one professor and two students from each school worked and produced together.

The stop of the encounter, Istanbul, is a bridge city that cultural and commercial streams flowed and joined underneath. Beside that this year the city also has another identity as being European Capital of Culture. Therefore, various identities and flows of our city are shown to our guests.

The first week of May, delegations from schools, inside Fine Arts Faculty of our institution with our professors and students realized 26 different workhops. During this period, within the theme of encounter, different ways of production, of thinking and of dealing with materials joined in one production. Those productions had been exhibited in final exhibition titled as “Outcome”. To share different ways of making and to see collaborative outcomes with art students had been very important by means of variety and movement given to art education.

Primary aim of the encounter for participants and hosting institution had been to share their experiences. During the round table meetings of the directors from each school, everyone agreed to sustain the collaboration and communication net in between the institutions.

Whole process of 10th Encounter of Mediterranean Art Schools is going to be and published as one book. This book will render the event long lasting for the future.
